Accents - like, we don't hear that as much on the radio, we don't hear that as much on podcasting. There's types of representation in the audio space that I'm excited to contribute to. It feels important to offer this kind of project to the audio world. Right? Like, what makes a country truly developed? So, that's one of the things that I'm thinking a lot about in this series. And what that has to do with is this idea of development. It does have to do with, uh, the comment that President Trump made in early 2018. One of the questions that I am really sitting with - and you'll hear this in the first episode of the show - is, of course, like the show is called Shithole Country. You're getting a snapshot of a time in my life, and a story, a narrative. So that's why you are hearing all these pseudonyms. And some of the things that my family shared with me, I realized after talking to people who are… have more expertise in these areas than I do, that it might open them up to some liability, some of the things that they shared. I was also recording in the beginning of 2018, end of 2017, a year after Donald Trump got elected. What kicks off the story is this decision that Afia has to make. Like an actual true story, with tape from my family, places that we went to, and also archival audio. It's me, kind of, sharing this journey that I - I went on. I went on a trip back to Ghana, which is where my family's from. And achieving the Ghanaian-American dream. And it's an eight-part audio memoir about what it means to be African in America, and American in Africa. I created a show called Shithole Country. You just gotta - you just gotta roll with it. It seems like maybe it's not going to work, maybe you're not used to it, maybe you haven't really heard of that combo before, but I'm pretty sure it's something you're going to enjoy. It's like taking fried plantain and dunking it in ketchup. How would you describe the tone of the show?ĪFIA: Mmkay.
